VOLUMES at Icebox Project Space, Philadelphia, PA, 2015

VOLUMES is an ongoing project that uses live sound from a drum set to activate an immersive grid of lights. Measurements of frequency and amplitude are mapped in a 3-dimensional grid based on the proportions of the surrounding architecture. The system translates sound into a visual language, connecting the instrument to the constructed environment. This 5,000 square foot installation at Icebox Project Space featured performances by drummers Gregory McDonald, Christopher Sean Powell, and Lenny Reece. Each percussionist explored the connection between sound, light, and space in their own unique way. I worked together with Dan Green, founder of 4MS Pedals, to develop an analog system consisting of modular synths, relays, and fluorescent tubes for this installation.
