VOLUMES at The Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota, FL, 2018

This site-specific installation at The Ringling Museum’s Monda Gallery for Contemporary Art was the 4th iteration of VOLUMES, an audio-visual instrument that uses live sound from a drum set to activate an immersive grid of lights. The system translates sound into a visual language, allowing musicians to express themselves 3-dimensionally in live performance. This iteration of VOLUMES marked a transition from fluorescent tubes to custom-built LED’s, as well as the expansion of the light grid from 3 levels to 5 levels, both helping to create a more dynamic audio-visual experience. More than 60 drummers from the Sarasota area were invited to participate in open sessions over the course of one month. In addition, I curated a weekly performance series featuring world-renowned drummers Brian Blade, Greg Fox, Taylor Gordon aka The Pocket Queen, and Antonio Sanchez. Each artist explored the connection between sound, light, and 3-dimensional space in their own unique way.
